Instant gratification: satisfactions gained by impulsive behaviours - choosing now over tomorrow.
This is a very scary concept because in this day, age and time, we are all sucked into the idea of wanting to be satisfied instantaneously, without much thought.
While this has been ingrained in pretty much all societies, it is still a fairly new concept that is gaining momentum through time.
Children now grow up with the concept that they would be able to get whatever they want and desire, as long as they can whine long enough, or when they throw a tantrum. Often, parents are quick to buy into and to satisfy their children, supplying them with what they want, as and when they throw a fit.
Since we are able to get what we want so easily, we begin to devalue the things that surround us (because things are so easily attainable now than it was before). And its scary because, we now take people and things for granted.
When we take people for granted, we allow ourselves and others to be put through the pain of having to earn this and that, before we can attain a certain status or alleviate our position on our friends' lists.
Yes, it might be true that some people are always and would constantly be at the top of your list. But think again, did they not work hard enough to attain that status, to be where they are now? Can we be so sure that the friendship or whatever relationship that we hold dear to, is exactly the same as what we are giving to the other?
I'm not doubting anyone or anything here, I really am not.
I'm just curious to know if we can truly mean the same to others as they are to us.
I obviously am no smartie pants and I don't think I'll ever be able to decipher this mystery that I constantly present myself with.
Instant gratification is such a scary thing because of our endless desires as human beings. Yet, it gives us a sense of protection, assurance, and a peace of mind because we know, at the back of our heads, that we can in some ways cry out to certain people to lend us a helping hand whenever we are in need of someone.
While the concept of instant gratification scares me to no end, it has also presented me with much positivity that I need from time to time, in order to get by.
